The story of Cycotic Youth begins back in Reagan-era Los Angeles, when the city was best known for bands like Mötley Crüe and Ratt ruling the music charts. But brothers Brown brothers; vocalist Jason and drummer Jimmy, weren't interested in the glitz and glamour of the so-called "hair metal" scene coming out of Hollywood at the time.
Instead, the teens formed Cycotic Youth, joining the Venice/Dogtown/Santa Monica legion of groups like Suicidal Tendencies, Excel, and No Mercy. The young outfit released demos in 1985, 1986, and 1987, bringing forth a sound that showcased elements of hardcore, raw punk, and thrash metal.
Cycotic Youth broke up in 1988, but not before sharing the stage with the likes of King Diamond, Cryptic Slaughter, and Death Angel along the way. 2011 saw the release of a self-titled compilation that collected the band's demos.
Fun fact: A 3rd generation Z-Boy, Jason Brown owns S.T. Tattoo Studio in Venice, which he acquired from none other than Mike Muir.
Now, three decades later, Cycotic Youth has returned with a new lineup fronted by vocalist Jason, along with bassist Mikey Beato, drummer Bill “Stillwill” Greenwood, and guitarists Nick Garcia and “Big” Rob Mikhail.
After playing some shows together, they entered the recording studio a tracked "Cycofied," Cycotic Youth's first new song since reforming:
"The song is about growing up in Dogtown and 'Cycofied' means just you know going hard whether it’s skateboarding BMX motocross surfing it’s a R word that we used to say back in the days," Jason tells No Echo.
"We're really excited to put out our single because it’s about our boy, [Z-Boy legend] Jay Adams, passed away a few years ago and he was a big driving force behind surfing and skateboarding in our area."
The singer continues: "Cycotic Youth coming back with the new album means so much to me and the band. We do have new members but me and my brother started it back in the '80s and it’s a fully different yet structured band with power and content in anger and we think y’all will enjoy it."
The "Cycofied" single will hit Spotify and Apple Music tomorrow, March 15th.
