Since first appearing on No Echo in 2024, San Antonio hardcore band Weak Spot have kept a steady pace—playing consistently in their hometown, making trips to nearby cities like Austin, and staying locked in on writing new material. “We’ve been playing as many shows as we can in our hometown of San Antonio, along with a few in Austin,” vocalist Sean Cloutier tells No Echo. “We really wanted to stay consistent and keep the momentum going, so we just kept pushing forward.”
That drive has led directly to the band’s latest release, New Age, a four-song EP that just dropped today. The material came together quickly following a three-song promo tape released last November via Gate Six Records. Rather than take a break, Weak Spot used that release as a springboard. “After putting that out, we almost immediately started working on the music that became the New Age EP,” Cloutier explains.
Recorded locally at FL Studios with Fernando Lemus, the EP continues to build on the band’s raw, grounded approach to hardcore. “We loved how [his work with Joust] sounded, so we went to him for our promo last fall and came back again for the EP,” Cloutier says. The result is a record that hits hard musically while digging deeper on a personal level.
Lyrically, New Age pulls from Cloutier’s own experiences while also taking aim at broader issues. “The lyrical background of this EP explores my personal struggles with anxiety and depression, alongside commentary on the current state of politics, religion, and the hardcore scene,” he says. The title track stands out in particular, featuring a guest appearance from former Weak Spot bassist Bryan, now of Public Threat. “I’m really stoked on how it came out,” Cloutier adds.
The release arrives at a time when San Antonio hardcore is firing on all cylinders. “San Antonio has a really thriving hardcore scene right now,” Cloutier says, pointing to the work of local labels and promoters like Out With The Goons, Gate Six, Last Laugh, and Coreruption. Regular shows continue to keep things active on a weekly basis, with free gigs happening at spots like Rumble and the Wav Room on the St. Mary’s Strip.
That energy extends to larger events as well. Cloutier highlights this year’s Stand Your Ground Fest—headlined by Shattered Realm—as a clear example of the city’s current momentum. “It sold out in 30 minutes and ran until midnight with a packed room the whole time,” he says. Weak Spot have also been able to tap into that wave, landing support slots on touring packages like Snuffed on Sight, Bayway, and Hold My Own. “Every time a touring package comes through, San Antonio shows up and does it right.”
With New Age out now and a hometown show scheduled for April 28, Weak Spot are keeping their sights set on the future. April alone has been packed with weekly shows, and the band is already planning to expand their reach this summer with dates in Houston, Dallas, and beyond.
For Cloutier, it’s all part of a bigger picture—one built on community and consistency. “Shoutout to Out With the Goons for putting out this release for us, Gate Six for always supporting us,” he says, before pointing listeners toward fellow Texas acts like Joust, Public Threat, Brotherly Love, Nemesis, Limit of Destruction, Bailout, Numb G, Beyond Reach, Mind Your Own, Price of Pain, and Fear of Loss.
