Rust is a new Canadian hardcore group that got on No Echo's radar thanks to one of its members, guitarist Rick Beaulieu. A talented photographer, Rick is a friend and supporter of the site who was first featured via the Photographer Spotlight series in 2017. But back to Rust.

The Ontario-based quintet create a groove-driven style of hardcore that will surely connect with many readers of No Echo. "We are not trying to recreate the wheel or resurrect something dead and gone, we are all passionate about this culture and want the music we create to represent that," says vocalist Ryan Bodiam. This summer, Rust will be dropping its self-titled debut EP, and we've got an early taste via "Embodied," a track from the collection:

Lyrics for "Embodied"

Embodied hatred, overflowing wrath
malice rages
this is the darkness that has crept over the edge of reality
cruelty dehumanizes
under the context of guilty judgemental voices

Wallow in your anger, cast out all knowledge
cease to breathe, in the midst of misled notions

Embodied hatred, overflowing wrath
malice rages
this is the darkness that has crept over...the edge of reality cruelty dehumanizes
under the context of guilty judgemental voices

Now your mouth is an open grave
lungs fill with dirt, world fades to black

Buried, buried alive, now your lungs fill dirt

Fill with dirt

"'Embodied' is about hatred and how it can consume human beings and eventually bury them," Ryan reveals. "It’s easy to strongly dislike others that are different, I believe that’s what causes a lot of terrible things to happen in this world. Allowing revenge, ignorance, and hate to be motivation can stop us from living a good life, helping the world, and seeking true justice. Although sometimes our hate may feel like justice, often it’s not and we cast too much value aside in pursuit of it. In the end hate takes away the ability to live well with our fellow humans."

Rust will be released on digital as well as cassette through Walk A Mile Records (Mourn, Sedition, Premonition) this summer. Follow Rust on Twitter and Instagram for more info and upcoming shows.
