Band: Zero Chill
From: Florida
Their formation story:
(Guy Gaffney, vocals): "Zac Spegal, our guitar player, and I have known each other since we were teenagers growing up in Florida. We hadn’t seen each other in years, but reconnected while we were both living in Portland Oregon and decided to write faster, short, heavy songs like we grew up hearing in the early '00s in Central Florida.
"After years of sitting on the bare bones versions of these songs, and Zac living back in Florida now, we hit up another old Florida friend Evan Miller (Blistered, Rescuer, Suitcase City). He threw down the leads you hear on the tracks. He’s a beast, hands down. Then our brothers Joe Finney on bass, and Justin Lowe (Blistered, Three Knee Deep, With Increase) on drums joined as well."
Their sound in their own words:
"Florida as fuck. Just short, fast, full of shit talkin', and ass beater parts. We try our best to keep songs under a minute and a half, or a minute, unless Evan wants to blast a lead. It’s the way hardcore should be. We grew up listening to a lot of Florida specific hardcore, because a lot of bands wouldn’t come down here that often.
"Bands like Nervous Breakdown, Kids Like Us, Bishop, and Know the Score were fast and pissed. It was perfect. We also had heavier bands around that time that shaped us like Seventh Star, Thick as Blood, Until the End, and In Due Time.
"Outside of Florida specific bands we always really liked Product of Waste, COA, Killing Time, and Death Threat. I’d say those bands played a big role in how we sound also."
Latest release info:
"We just wanted to write something fast, heavy, and that shouted out Florida as much as possible. Real Florida man type shit. Something that jits would want to mosh to, but that old heads would turn up as well to blast instead of 'Free Bird.' (Shoutout Florida legends Lynyrd Skynyrd)."
Future plans:
"Nothing as of right now, because I’m in the process of moving back to Florida. The demo was recorded while here on a long break, but once I’m back in a few months we’ll begin to play shows."
What other bands from their region should we check out?
"Florida is killin' it. There’s some great current bands, and in the making. Shoutout to Three Knee Deep, Six Paths, Contention, Exit Strategy, Day By Day, new band Deadset, new band Forevers Horizon, WISH, Burning Strong, Statement of Pride, and Florida Hardcore in general.
"Outside of Florida you should also pay attention to Desecrate from Montreal, Kingz of Pain from Portland, Oregon, and obviously Volcano. Our brother Jeremy who sings for them, and is featured on the demo, hails from this wonderful state as well.
"I wanna plug Ethan Murphy also, he’s the king. Everyone should record at Back Forty with him in Florida. Shoutout to the Lads and Smooth Brained Boyz. Florida blood forever."
