Band: What Counts
From: Bloomington, Indiana
Their formation story:
(Chance A, vocals): "We started because there were no straight edge bands in Indiana. We are all in bands (Senescence, Full Stride, Velocity) that have straight edge members, so we decided like a year ago to start a fully edge band. It took us until a few months ago to actually do it, but we were talking about it for a while.
"We also wanted to do fun hardcore that didn’t take itself too seriously."
Their sound in their own words:
"I think we’re a mix of straight forward Youth Crew and early 2000s Boston stuff. For fans of Mental, Step Forward, Nike Air Max's, hooded moshers, Youth of Today, Carry On, Minority Unit, side-to-side tom parts. Some of our modern influences are Anklebiter and Shroud."
Latest release info:
"Indiana Straight Edge is our first demo. We wrote those songs over the course of a few weeks and played them at a bunch of shows around the Midwest. Bill Stack in Indy did all the recording and mixing/mastering. And our friend Joey Goergen did the art. I put it out on my label, RTR Tapes."
Future plans:
"Our immediate plans are to keep playing a ton of shows. There’s a lot happening in Bloomington and Indy, so we’re just stoked to be a part of it. We’re doing a 3-day run this weekend. We also want to put out a few more songs this winter."
What other bands from the region should we check out?
"We’re really tight with Springfield, Illinois so I have to shout them out. Pucker Up just put out some new heat. Also Sob Story and Waydown from Cinci. Those are like our sister scenes.
"Some of the younger bands in our area about to put out demos are Desensitize and Youth In Asia. Both younger folks that are an integral part of Bloomington/Indy. Also gotta plug our own bands: Senescence, Full Stride, and Velocity."
