New Hardcore Band Spotlight: Weak Spot

Band: Weak Spot
From: San Antonio, Texas

Their formation story:
(Sean Cloutier, vocals): "Weak Spot fully came together in Early 2024, but it's been in the making for quite some time. Nick was the original drummer in our previous band, New Methods, and pretty much since that band broke up in 2022, Nick and I wanted to start a new project. Nick plays drums, and I've always done vocals in bands, so we really needed to find a guitarist to work with us to get things going.

"We had a lot of friends and people in mind that we tried to recruit over the last two years, but nothing ever really came together until we finally recruited our friend Bobby around February of 2024 to play guitar. That’s when things finally started to get put into motion. Nick, Bobby, and I started writing the first couple of Weak Spot songs together in my garage, and things just started clicking.

"Soon after, I reached out to our friend Christian to play guitar, and then our good friend Bryan, who plays in Joust and Public Threat to play bass."

Their sound in their own words:
"Our influences include a lot of 2000-2010s hardcore bands like Guns Up!, Swamp Thing, Kids Like Us, The Rival Mob, and Down to Nothing. The Most is one of my favorite hardcore albums, and we actually have been opening our set with 'Along for the Ride' by Down to Nothing as a cover, if that tells you anything.

"Texas hardcore over the years, like Iron Age, Power Trip, and Bitter End, is also a huge influence."

Latest release info:
"I think the First Strike demo has something for everyone. 'Fallen Order' has some metal sounds in it, 'First Strike' has a thrash/crossover feel, and 'Make You Pay,' 'Last Lap,' and 'Weak Spot' are really fast and have some big moments. Most of the record was written by us just sharing riffs in my garage space and having a good time.

"I believe whatever we do next will have a more focused sound; this demo was about trying different things and figuring out what we like the most. This demo also features some fun guest vocal appearances.

"I am so happy my good friends Carlos from Doomsday and Zac from Inner Self were able to rock with us on this release. My old band toured with Doomsday in early 2020, and we have been friends ever since, so this was a dream come true.  Zac is Mr. San Antonio hardcore himself! His band, Inner Self, has been killing it, and I don't think anyone could do a better Countdown City hype moment on a track than him."

Future plans:
"We plan on playing a lot more shows in San Antonio and throughout Texas. We have only played three shows so far in our hometown, and then we took some time off from shows recently to finish recording the demo. Now that it's out, we have one show lined up in December, but we are ready to play more in early 2025.

"We are also already working on our next release and have a few songs written for that, so I don’t think it will be too long before you hear more stuff from us!"

What other bands from their region should we check out?
"Inner Self, Joust, Public Threat, Modus Operandi (my personal favorite TXHC release of the year), Anchorite, Nemesis, Limit of Destruction (they don't have music yet, but when they do, it's gonna be good), Aguanta Guerra, and Fear of Loss."
