New Hardcore Band Spotlight: Big Life

Band: Big Life
From: Detroit, Michigan

Their formation story:
(Ryan Allen, guitar) "I needed an outlet for some punk and hardcore jams that weren’t quite a fit for my current energetic power pop band, Extra Arms. With a handful of rough demos, I enlisted the help of my best friend Dan Nixon (ex-Negatives) to contribute lyrics and vocals, Sean Gauvreau (Grey Gardens, ex-Black Dahlia Murder) on bass, and Jordan VonZynda (Hidebehind, ex-Due North) on drums.

"Jordan and I had been actively playing and recording with our other bands, but Dan and Sean had been out of the game for years, so we weren’t quite sure how it was all gonna come together. At the first practice, shit clicked pretty much right away, and we were off and running. Over the next month, we worked up an EP worth of songs we’re really proud of and are psyched for people to hear."

Their sound in their own words:
"Big Life sounds like 1985 Dischord/Rev Summer bands, crossed with the punk coming out of the Midwest around the same time. Inspired by Dag Nasty, Black Flag, Husker Du, Fugazi, and current bands like Praise."

Latest release info:
"We’ve got an 8-song EP that just came out on Setterwind Records that we recorded with Chuck Huber at Drifting Sun Sound and mastered by Paul Miner at Buzzbomb Studios. It’s a loud, energetic document of a band moving fast, creating shit on the fly, and really captures how stoked the four of us were about how Big Life was coming together."

Future plans:
"Playing as many shows as we can this summer, getting some more reps for the new guys. Can’t stop writing songs. Might run a marathon. Maybe watch Heat on DVD again?"

What other bands from their region should we check out?
"Extra Arms, Grey Gardens, Hidebehind, Idle Ray, Deadbeat Beat, Doubt It!, Gusher, Rekt, Twin Deer, Strange Magic, Buried Lights, Normal, Bend, and Bitter Truth."
