Seattle grindcore outfit Smearing came together in late 2024 and wasted no time getting moving. According to vocalist Clint Gee, the band formed out of existing friendships in the local scene and a shared urge to play something fast and chaotic.
“It all happened so fast,” Gee tells No Echo. “Smearing started in December of 2024. We had all been in some different bands around Seattle for a while.” The other members were already rehearsing as a three-piece when Gee heard the demos. “I immediately asked for a stab at vocals. I wrote a couple of songs and showed up to practice two days later. Then we finished recording the first EP two weeks after that. It all kind of clicked. I think we all just wanted to be in a fast band with fucked up live shows.”
Musically, Smearing keep things rooted in grindcore while pulling from death metal and darker hardcore. “We are a grind band first and foremost,” Gee explains. “We grew up on Pig Destroyer and Napalm Death, and give some nods to bands like Dead in the Dirt, Gaza, and Weekend Nachos. In the van, we listen to stuff like Crowbar and Morbid Angel, so we never shy away from a chunky death metal riff either.”
That mix comes through on the band’s latest release, Acts of Service, which Gee describes as “16 minutes of grinding terror.” The record was self-released after the band opted to stay DIY. “No labels wanted to put it out, or couldn’t do anything we couldn’t do ourselves. I guess we are DIY, but we’ll take some vinyl money next time,” he adds with a laugh.
Lyrically, the material leans into bleak themes. “It’s a lot of dark thoughts and nihilism; monoculture, human nature, and lived experiences. The world we live in is so fucked that you have to step back and laugh at the absurdity of it all.”
Smearing are part of a Northwest scene, Gee says, that is thriving. “Seattle and Tacoma are killing it. Tacoma has become this all-ages hardcore mecca, and Seattle leans more death and doom, so that duality is breeding some interesting bands.” He points to groups like Nurser, Distest, and Al Bundy, as well as Portland’s Lesser Animal and Bleach.
For Smearing, the mission remains simple: fast songs, heavy riffs, and unhinged live shows.
