Obsoletion: Brazilian Band Unchains Wretched Vision via Raw Hardcore & Metal on Debut LP

Hailing from São Paulo, Brazil comes Obsoletion, a band with an interesting blend of influences. With a sound informed by everything from Integrity to G.I.S.M. to Celtic Frost, the group's 2019 demo landed them on the radar of Sentient Ruin who then issued it the States a couple of years later.

With new guitarist Filipe Maia joining original members bassist Daniel AZT (Stomp and ex-Joker), guitarist Zoio, vocalist Flávio Barbosa, and drummer Lucas Alonso soon after, Obsoletion continued playing shows and writing the material that would eventually land on their forthcoming debut album.

A self-titled affair, the album's lyrics deal with "themes of political pessimism, dystopian science fiction, and rogue capitalism." It's a nasty-sounding collection that mirrors the bleak outlook displayed in Obsoletion's lyrical point of view.

No Echo is pleased as piss to bring you a stream of Obsoletion one day before its official release:

"This album is the result of a slower process than we would have liked, as some of the songs were composed about five years ago," the band told me via email. "However, most of it was created just over a year ago, after Filipe (guitarist) joined the band. Although we don’t have big ambitions regarding composition, the band has always been concerned with not sounding obvious or like a mere reproduction of something that has already been done.

In this sense, we’ve always tried to mix various influences, ranging from hardcore and metal classics to current bands we like and believe somehow resonate with what we want to create."

The LP's nightmarish art design was created by Fernando Giotefeli, Jordy Kuster, and José Vinícius. "The entire album (cover, lyrics, layout, etc.) was developed based on concepts that are both contemporary and futuristic," the Obsoletion guys told me.

"For this, we drew on ideas from various sources to create a kind of Lovecraftian cyber-dystopia, where ancient entities are summoned through advanced technology, which, in turn, is used to create and launch young gods into the cosmos."
