More Reality: Toronto Festival Celebrates Hardcore Music with 4-Day Banger

More Reality, Toronto’s fiercely independent hardcore fest, kicks off this Thursday, April 3rd at Expo Vintage Warehouse (get tickets). The stacked lineup features Merauder, Narrowhead, Angel Du$t and a host of exciting bands from the US, UK, and Canada.

Merauder caps the fest off on Sunday, April 6 with a special set commemorating the 30th anniversary of their seminal album Master Killer

“We’re honoured, really," More Reality organizer Jamie Fastlane explains. “Merauder is one of my all-time favourite hardcore bands and incredibly influential to so many people. Especially with it being the thirtieth anniversary of [Master Killer]. I’m really psyched to see them play.”

Fans have a chance to see the NYHC legends in an intimate setting at one of the most vibrant DIY venues in the city. “Expo is great because there are so few DIY venues in Toronto, especially of that size,” Jamie says. “We debated this year whether to book it in a somewhat larger space, but I think being able to see these bigger acts in a smaller space will be really cool. I imagine the dance floor for Skourge, Merauder, Angel Du$t, etc., will be mental.”

More Reality also provides a vital snapshot of hardcore’s future both locally and at large. “We wanted to book some bands that aren’t on the regular festival circuit as much,” Jamie explains. He and co-organizer Matt Tomasi play a big part in Toronto’s local scene. They have their finger on the pulse, and the lineup highlights an array of upcoming talent.

That includes exciting new bands from the semi-local label Total Supply Records. With roots in Toronto and Detroit, Total Supply’s roster and affiliates include exciting young bands such as The Sissy Boys and King’s Command, both of whom play on Saturday, April 5th. “Total Supply has done a phenomenal job,” Jamie says, but he’s quick to add: “I think the reception in Toronto will be great for every young band on the fest.”

Many members of the city’s hardcore scene split time in great alt/college rock bands like 9Million and So Perfect. The More Reality organizers wanted to make room for different sounds, celebrating the efforts of their friends from the local hardcore and alternative communities.

“It came down to booking bands we really like,” Jamie says. Each day has a specific feel, but according to Jamie “it wasn’t really a conscious decision … it sort of fell into place that way.” The Thursday pre-show and Friday “rock show” feature prominent alternative and hardcore adjacent bands.

Saturday April 5th and Sunday April 6th lean harder, with headlining sets by Angel Du$t and Merauder, respectively. Many excellent established bands like Restraining Order, Seed of Pain, and Glitterer are playing the fest as well.

Single day tickets are available (online at Homie Shit Mag or in person at Emission Record Store) so attendees can curate their experience based on what they want to see. That said, each day has a bit of something for everyone.

“I think first and foremost Matt and I want to have a fest that feels fun,” Jamie adds. “I would really not want someone to go to More Reality and have a bad time.”
