Dallas–Fort Worth hardcore band Mass Appeal came together during the long, strange months of the COVID era, but what started as a casual creative outlet quickly turned into something more focused. Guitarist Daniel traces the band’s origin back to late-night gaming sessions with drummer Caj.
“We formed, like a lot of other bands, during COVID,” Daniel tells No Echo. “Caj and I were playing Warzone every night, and the subject of doing something creative together came up. We weren’t really doing anything at the moment. We knew a few others looking for something creative to do. We didn’t set out for a specific sound, but we knew we would be able to create something sick using all of our unique playing and writing styles.”
That open-ended approach helped shape Mass Appeal’s sonic identity. Rather than locking themselves into a single narrow lane, the band draws on a wide range of influences.
“Our influences come from literally everything we listen to, from Kirk Franklin to Slayer,” Daniel explains, “but if we had to describe our sound, I would say it's a mix of NYHC, metal, and ‘Texas.’”
The band’s latest EP, None But One, marks a turning point for the group. According to Daniel, it’s the first time Mass Appeal truly felt like a cohesive unit. “We released an EP shortly after COVID, but while we were writing None But One, we finally felt like we had started to find our sound and locked in as a cohesive unit,” he says. “We recorded with our friends Evan and Hunter near the start of 2025. They are friends with us, and we have worked together with them before, recording and playing in other bands together.”
The sessions also marked a shift in roles within the band. “Before this project, our vocalist Josh had only ever played guitar in other bands, but we thought it would be sick to have them try it out,” Daniel notes. “It turned out it worked for what we were doing. Everything lyrically is written by them, so it’s all personal to them and gives them another creative outlet they never had before.”
Mass Appeal are part of a thriving Dallas–Fort Worth hardcore community that, in Daniel’s words, is “stronger than ever.” In addition to Daniel and Caj, the band's lineup features vocalist Josh, bassist Alvin, and guitarist Juan.
“The scene here in DFW is popping off,” he says. “There are multiple well-attended shows a week, and we have bands popping off beyond DFW like Empty Shell Casing, and I Promised the World. We have so many bands with such a variety of different styles, it's really refreshing. The whole state has scenes exploding again, from Houston to El Paso.”
He also points listeners toward a handful of local standouts. “Some local bands to check out are Spit My Rage, Ozone, Defcon1, Grimoire, Fifteen Rhema, and Deep Cover.”
As the band continues to push forward, Daniel makes sure to acknowledge the people helping them along the way. “We want to shout out Tyler and everyone at LDB for fucking with us and putting out this new EP.”
