Song of the Day

Loxe, “Morphine,” from Prosa Poética (Self-Released, 2021)

We’re only about a month into 2021 and I am fine proclaiming that it’s going to be a great year for hardcore. I’ve already lost count of the number of singles or album announcements coming my way.

Add Japanese band Loxe to the growing list of new bands to check out. They play a style of hardcore that is true to their homeland, really keeping things nasty and putrid sounding.

My knowledge of Japanese hardcore is too shallow to give them a propper comparison, but they easily fit alongside a band like Portrayal of Guilt.

Their Bandcamp tags attract a variety of sub-genres, and none of them seem like too big a stretch. It’s truly a maximalist approach they are bringing to hardcore.

All of the songs are great but I’ll point to "Morphine" as our Song of the Day. It does a good job of encapsulating all the disparate elements that make up Loxe.

I hear some metalcore guitar work, with a bit of death metal mixed in there, and the frenzied drumming brings power violence to mind.

What this concoction ultimately makes is a disgusting song; I mean that as a compliment of course and ultimately works as a perfect encapsulation of what winter solitude feels like.
