Hot Load emerged from Southern California with Fate Unknown and have only gained momentum since. Over the past year, the band has been in constant motion—writing new material and bringing their brand of what I like to call "punk 'n' roll" to audiences on the road.
Their latest record, Realized, finds the addition of Bravo from Death Rites on bass, who brought a new dynamic to the group, while a run through the U.S. East Coast with Pink Mist set the platform for what comes next: an ambitious UK and European tour.
Speaking with No Echo, guitarist Marvin says Realized pushes the band's sound further without abandoning what made Hot Load stand out in the first place. "Having a deadline really put a fire in us to push the Hot Load sound to a new level sonically," he tells No Echo.
"We wanted rock 'n' roll leads and hardcore riffs for kids to mosh to."
Realized finds Hot Load digging into personal struggle and growth. The record confronts addiction, depression, recovery, and the process of self-realization, grounding its lyrics in lived experience.
Although Hot Load has become equally comfortable sharing bills with hardcore, punk, d-beat, and metal bands, Marvin says the group has never viewed itself as strictly belonging to one scene. "It's been awesome, and we do feel accepted," he says.
"The heavy metal label is a bit confusing since we've always viewed our music as some sort of combo of punk and rock 'n' roll, but as long as people dig our music we'll take it."
Marvin also points to a long list of newer bands keeping him excited, shouting out friends in Pink Mist, La Pregunta, Gonzer, Mr Radical, Cristø, Beheaded, Dust Collector, Total Vacation, Animated Violence, Neo Filth, Fantasy Lane, Stolen Valor, and Situations, while also recommending international acts including Mock Execution, Spike Pit, Sex Pill, Phantom Rider, Burning Wind, Young Blades, Long Knife, Hedonist, Klonns, Deathro, Umbro, and Krigshog.
Next up is an ambitious UK and European tour before the band returns home for Thrasher magazine's Death Match at Pappy & Harriet's in September. The full lineup for that hasn't been announced yet.
With more touring already in the works beyond Europe, Marvin says the band's focus remains simple: keep playing shows and keep making records.
"We just want to say thank you to everyone who has supported us throughout the years—from fans, friends, family, and the people we've met on the road," he says. "Tell your family and friends you love them. We just want to keep rocking and making records, so that our records can outlive us."
