Horrid Remorse: French Band Summons Frostcore on Debut Release

A few weeks ago, I came across Rigged from the Start, the debut demo from a French band called Horrid Remorse. I was in a particularly glum mood that day and the quartet's music fit the vibe.

"We had the idea to do a Darkside NYC worship band on the way back to Rennes after the Paris Hardcore Fest," say guitarist Tom and bassist Adri about Horrid Remorse's start. Another recent band to ride in the Frostcore stylistic lane is Killing Frost out of Finland.

"So the influences are obviously Darkside NYC with beats of Ringworm and old-school metal like Celtic Frost or Hellhammer. They're pretty much the same influences [guitarist] Alan Blake used for Darkside NYC after he left Sheer Terror."

The material on Rigged from the Start also benefits from its grimey recording that sounds like it was tracked in a bomb shelter. "It was recorded and mixed in our rehearsal room," Tom and Adri tell me.

Horrid Response vocalist Emil says: "The songs on the demo are about working class struggle, suicidal thoughts, and alienation from society."

For now, the band is planning on booking more shows in France, and are also working up material for another release. Also of note, members of Horrid Remorse also play in Days of Revelation and Gruesome Pledge.
