Daisycutter: Minneapolis Band Douses Their Hardcore with Pop Dust on Debut EP

If it weren't for a certain Canadian hardcore band, Daisycutter probably wouldn't exist. "(Bassist) Kyle [Foundry] posted a thread on a Twin Cities Hardcore Facebook group looking for anyone who wanted to start a band that sounded like Comeback Kid," says Mikey Lipinski, vocalist/guitarist of the Minneapolis quartet.

"Our good buddy Joe (who now does most of our photos) roped me into jamming with [drummer] Matt [Kelly], Kyle, and himself in an incredibly messy and cramped practice space. Joe and I had played in a shitty hardcore band years before and were itching to get something going again. We didn’t have any material that we wanted to work on so I suggested that we try playing a song that I had demoed with the help of Joe in his upstairs office earlier that year.

"Right there we decided to do something a bit less abrasive than traditional hardcore. We’ll see how that goes, subject to change. [Guitarist] Jason [Soejoto] joined us a few months later as we were polishing things up for a show. Jason and I play in another hardcore band called Sunset, so we already had a bit of a working relationship and Jason and Matt both played in the Portland, Oregon hardcore scene at different points in time and had some mutual friends. He carries us when we’re playing live, dude shreds."

Daisycutter just released their debut EP, a 6-track collection called Hates You. It's a hook-driven record that isn't too surprising when you hear Mikey list off some of their influences.

"We all really love bands like Jawbreaker, Quicksand, Failure, Jawbox; as well as more hardcore-influenced bands such as Lifetime, Kid Dynamite, and early Saves the Day."

Mikey and his Daisycutter bandmates are loving playing together, but they aren't going out on a worldwide touring campaign any time soon. "The only real plans we have are to have fun and play out a bit. Go visit friends in other states and ruin everyone’s night with our stage volume. We've also began working on a new batch of songs and are excited to see what comes out with our fully realized lineup with Jason in the fold."

How about the other bands in and around the Minneapolis music scene? What's cooking out there?

"Identity Crisis is amazing, youngsters that are doing it right, staying positive and keeping things fun while demonstrating incredible musicianship. Killusonline is dope, Theo is an incredible drummer and their live tone is very fucking good. Toilet Rats, so catchy and fun. Cheap Bouquet, they’re like an ode to mid 2000s pop-punk and we love it."
