In the case of Bruiserweight, the band delivers a sound as vicious and focused as their band name would suggest.
The quartet is based out of Montreal, Québec, while their vocalist, Grayson, relocated from Savannah, Georgia to join their ranks. "Bruiserweight’s first practice was in December 2022 and our first show was opening for Buried Alive 2 months later in January 2023," guitarist John told No Echo via email. "We put out our demo on Lifers Records in the summer of 2023 and went on to play all around Canada and the Northeast and Midwest in America. "
I've already mentioned Bruiserweight's brutal sound, but here's what John said about it: "We take inspiration from '90s New York and Cleveland hardcore, for example Biohazard, Madball, and Integrity."
A big fan of Bruiserweight's approach is Unbeaten Records who have signed the band to their roster. The maiden release of the new partnership will be an EP called Still Standing. Today, Soak in a track from the forthcoming EP called "Playing with Fire" below:
"'Playing With Fire' is about those folks that talk a lot, but are too afraid to back it up to your face. That’s basically the idea," said John. "The EP was recorded by our vocalist, Grayson, and mixed by Andy Nelson (Pain of Truth, Harm's Way) over at Bricktop in Chicago."
I've heard good things about the current state of the hardcore scene in Bruiserweight's backyard, and John's following comments certaintly didn't surprise me. "The Montreal Hardcore scene is very strong, local shows do extremely well, and every show is like a big party with all your friends.
"If you’ve never been to a Montreal show I highly recommend checking one out, you’ll feel right at home. Bands to checkout include Spite House, Prowl, and Drive By."

Still Standing will be out on April 4th via Unbeaten Records (pre-order).
