One of my favorite quotes attributed to an author is one from Victor Hugo: “Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent.”
In a time where familiarity and supposed definitions are seen as a comfort worth protecting; I want to lean into the pain. The unknown being avoided only makes for a stagnant and dull existence. Three different approaches to heavy music made for an eclectic night at El Rey Theatre over the weekend in Los Angeles.
Throughout the oceanic atmosphere of the set by Slow Crush, the abrasive sludge of Primitive Man, and finally the textured shadow play of Amenra; I was reminded of the value of exploring the unknown.
Admittedly, I’ve been familiar with Amenra for a long time now but I think the sentiment stands all the same. Any time you experience a live show, I believe there is something to be discovered if you’re willing to give your full attention.
For those who haven’t seen these bands yet, I would recommend making it out to one of these dates even if you’re only familiar with one of the three bands. If it is all new to you, I’d all the more encourage you to attend one of these dates.
Heavy music isn’t meant to be limited to nonsensical genre labels and mostly black t-shirts, but unfortunately many have settled for just that.

Many thanks to Relapse Records and Stephanie of Another Side PR for allowing me to document the show. Make sure to keep an eye out for Kalvarie, the solo release by Amenra singer Colin Van Eeckhout (CHVE) which is set for release through Relapse on the 31st of May.
