Aaron Stauffer, best known as the vocalist of the Washington post-hardcore band Seaweed, has surfaced with a new solo track titled “Tower Resolve”—a stark, introspective piece shaped by both long-standing creative partnerships and a stripped-down, personal approach.
Stauffer told me the song's meaning came into focus only after it was written. “I never really think about the lyrics until way after writing them,” he explains. The imagery in “Tower Resolve” centers on distance and disconnection. “There were never towers in North America prior to the European invasion. One’s response from a tower lacks the climate or feeling of what is taking place on the ground.”
The track also marks a reunion with longtime collaborator Wax Roof, whom Stauffer describes as more than just a musical partner. “This is the first time I’ve worked with Wax Roof in a long while,” he says. “We literally are family, so we have been playing together for 20-plus years. We used to do a Christmas jam annually.”
Before recording, Stauffer pitched a loose sonic direction for the collaboration. “When we talked about the track prior to his collaboration, I described what I was hoping for as ‘West Coast Gary Numan,’” he says. With the instrumentation handled largely by Stauffer, the final result lands somewhere between industrial and post-punk. “Since all my guitars and keys live, maybe it’s Godflesh meets Joy Division with a side of Gary Numan. I think I’m the only guitarist on this track.”
The result is a brooding, atmospheric return from a voice long associated with the Pacific Northwest’s alternative underground.
