New Hardcore Band Spotlight: The Sink

Band: The Sink
From: Ottawa, Ontario

Their formation story:
(Ryan Clark, guitar/vocals): "I met Paul [Oppelt, drums] while we were working at the same job. We hit it off quickly as we had a lot of crossover for influences but also opened each other up to different bands. Paul and I started to jam and demo several ideas at his home studio.

"As songs became fully realized and recorded, we started to fill out the line up so we could release music and play shows. Dylan [Parsons, bass/vocals] and Logan [Moham, guitar] joined us at the end of 2022 on bass and guitar respectively. The three of us had previously been in a band together so The Sink has been a comfortable balance of feeling fresh and familiar. 2023 was our first full year as a band and the experiences it brought were very invigorating for all of us."

Their sound in their own words:
"We’re a band from Ottawa, Ontario. Our sound is built around energetic guitar riffs/drums that slide through chaotic breakdowns, dark atmospheres and emotionally charged lyrics. Our songs flex our chaotic metalcore/hardcore influences with alternative/emo sensibilities."

Latest release info:
"Reaching For Light is our debut EP. It features our first 3 singles ('Left to Fall,' 'Cartoon Cliches,' and 'Holding On') as well two more songs. We wanted to create something that was cohesive and dynamic. There’s layers and atmosphere, there’s parts that are raw and in your face but it all works together.

"It was produced/mixed/mastered in house by Paul. I’m really stoked on how it ended up sounding."

Future plans:
(Dylan Parson, bass/vocals): "We’re very excited to be sharing the stage with new friends and local deathcore heavyweights, Salem Trials, alongside Premeditated, and No Hope X Mankind to celebrate the release of Reaching for Light.

"As we gear up for this milestone, we're already in the creative process, working on new material. Our aspirations extend beyond, with plans to venture into other cities in Ontario and Quebec in the near future."

What other bands from the region should we check out?
(Dylan): "In the Ottawa area, we're surrounded by incredible talent. Check out our friends in Skull Gate if you're into thrashy hardcore, or dive into the chaotic vibes of Moratorium. Both acts are excellent and definitely worth a listen."
