Band: SPEW
From: Birmingham, UK
Their formation story:
(Tony Bontana, guitar/vocals): "SPEW actually started as a solo project. After working with Anaiah for the first few ZULU projects, I was fired up to create heavy music from my/our POV.
"I was not happy with the lack of diversity in my local scene and wanted to see more POC POV’s in the music that I love the most. Everything up until our most recent album, Public Enemy, was recorded solo.
"Things started to pick up in 2021 when we released the Hate Dealer EP and at that point I knew it was crucial we had a full live band."
Their sound in their own words:
"It’s straight up hardcore punk. Influences include Public Enemy, ZULU, GAG, Bad Brains, and Spazz."
Latest release info:
"Public Enemy is the summation of a few years of hard work. 'An Educated Minority is the Public Enemy' was the phrase that came to mind when we were putting together the album. Speaking from personal experience the album tackles navigating this life l general as a black man in the UK from family, Trauma, relationships to education."
Future plans:
"We are currently writing and planning to record a follow up EP this year. We have a few cool things in the pipeline but we mainly just want to get out and play as many shows as humanly possible so please get at us!"
What other bands from your region should we check out?
"The Subordinates, Outlander, Machiavellian Art."
