New Hardcore Band Spotlight: Drosera

Band: Drosera
From: Gainesville, Florida

Their formation story:
(Collin Barndt, guitar): "Christian (drums) and I met via the internet through a love of heavy music, and many frustrating attempts at finding like-minded musicians in a new town. We instantly had a ton of musical chemistry after jamming, and eventually found Phil (vocals) and René (bass) through mutual friends.

"We were told a lot in our search that not many people in town would fuck with the kind of music we wanted to make, but that ended up being completely false. Gainesville fucking rules and more bands should come through (hit up Respite Events)."

Their sound in their own words:
"We all love a wide array of music, but overall our sound is very dissonant, heavy, and frenzied. There are elements of doom, grindcore, thrash, and straight-up hardcore punk in our music, but really do our best to incorporate them in tasteful ways that make sense with the songs."

Latest release info:
"Visions of a Dying World is comprised of 3 songs. We wanted to experiment and expand a bit on some of the musical elements from our first release. We did everything ourselves, recording, mixing, and album art.

"'Tunguska' was the first song the four of us in a room together wrote at once, and it basically was finished right then and there, lyrics and all. It’s about our role in decimating the planet, the threat of ecological collapse and abuse of power. That song is for Mean Pete (Remembering Never, xBishopx, Ether Coven), now and forever.

''Cryptid,' on the other hand, tells of a different apocalypse, and is very deliberately Lovecraftian. I wouldn’t show it to someone and say 'this is our grindcore song,' but I think of it as that. It might be my favorite song we’ve written to date.

"These songs were written close enough together that they felt like their own release, and we’re very excited to share them."

Future plans:
"We have a week-long tour that we’re doing from March 13th through the 18th, and planning on heading up the East Coast for a few weeks later this year. We have a few new songs in the tank, so hopefully another release later in the year as well."

What other bands from their region should we check out?
Fulcrum, Damage Done, Trench Broom, Found Dead, and Cursed Birth from Gainesville. Plague Spitter from Tampa. Domain and For My Sins from South Florida. Fixed View, Drag Pattern, Second Impact, and Banshee from Jacksonville."
