Band: Defiance

Their formation story:
"The band was an idea that came up in 2023 between Sabrina our vocalist and Marlene our bassist. They were both eager to play in a hardcore band with a message and where they could create the musical environment for this message, namely addressing social (in-)justice, specifically the oppression of women, the LGBTQIA+ community and all forms of discrimination.

"In 2024, they reached out to Robin, our guitarist, who immediately started writing songs which were then refined together once our drummer joined. The first show happened in July 2024 and since then the train kept rolling and we are happy and honored that we were able to play that many shows without even one released song. Until now!"

Their sound in their own words:
"We are aiming for a style that fits between the classic hardcore influences of Trapped Under Ice and Backtrack but also leaves room for a modern twist on punk where we take our influences mostly from bands like GEL, Scowl, Jivebomb, or Buggin. We also try to incorporate own elements which relate to our origins, Asia and Latin America.

"In addition to our music, we actively promote female empowerment and aim to inspire more women to claim their space in the hardcore and punk scene. This mission is central to our identity and is reflected in our lyrics, presence, and actions within the community."

Latest release info:
"'Kisses' was one of the first songs we wrote together as a band. From a first draft to the final song we took several iterations and worked together in our studio and rehearsal room to give it the groove and twist it has now as a song.

"The lyrics and message behind the song are very important to us as many people get oppressed in their lives by their partner and are held silent while going through hell, both mentally and physically. It is a message to speak and stand up for one’s rights, feelings, and to break the chains of the oppressor."

Future plans:
"We are thrilled that we will release more music in the near future and are happy to work with BDHW as a label. We are looking forward to play more shows throughout Europe and of course would love to be able to play in other countries outside the EU to spread our message. Obviously, writing new songs is also part of our plans in 2025."

What other bands from their region should we check out?
"The hardcore scene in our area is really small but there are several bands that try to make an impact and share their message, here are some bands a booking team and venue we recommend checking out: BNL booking, Juha West (venue), GCU, Soulprison, Bodypiler, Deadweight, Minus Youth, Sliver, Devastate, Twin Mill, Snakepiss.

"We hope to encourage young people to start bands, and engage in the scene! Grab an instrument, the mic, a camera, a pencil, or start booking shows."
