Back in 2022, in a basement somewhere in Portland, Oregon, three veteran punk musicians got together to jam for the first time. Some of the other bands drummer John Massel, guitarist Ryan Shanahan, and bassist Mike Vera have played in throughout the years include Lock and Key, Amusement, and Beach Party, but this new music they were working on was developing quickly.
Later that year, the trio welcomed Youth League guitarist Mike Large into the fold and eventually dubbed their new project, SPARES. The group was solidified with the addition of vocalist Gabriel Mathews.
Everything from the noise rock of '90s AmRep to the melodicism of late '80s Dischord Records to the angular post-hardcore of San Diego’s '90s underground scene is mined for influence in the SPARES toolkit.
The post-punk outfit's debut self-titled EP won't be out till next month, but SPARES recently dropped a track from it called "Grease Stains" to whet the appetite. The Adam Smith-directed music video for the song can be seen below:
SPARES was recorded and mixed by the band's very own Mike Vera and mastered by Ryan Boesch at Candor Recording. The band will be heading out a short run of dates throughout the Pacific Northwest next month:
