Overthrow: ‘90s Long Island Hardcore Band’s Debut LP Finds New Life

Long Island, New York’s Overthrow are a throwback to the era of hardcore they were borne in. Formed in 1995 and now playing shows again, the band's sound, style, and aesthetic combine together as impressive evidence of the ingenuity and vibe of LIHC during that period.

Overthrow returned earlier this year, recording and releasing new music with the songs “Anywhere But Here” and “The Calling,” both showcasing the group’s trademark style while also offering up some modern twists in the music.

But the band’s lone full-length, React, originally released in 1999 on Triple Crown Records, has remained mostly dormant until now.

Race Productions, having issued Overthrow’s seminal Empowerment Cover-Up 7”, is ready to re-release React in a very limited vinyl run. The LP will have a new layout and artwork all crafted by Contino Studios to celebrate the re-release.

As with so much of their history, this re-release is a family affair for Overthrow. Jon Contino was around for Overthrow’s shows way back when, and now his studio has crafted the new layout. Anthony Race is one of the band’s oldest and closest friends, and his Race Productions label will handle the reissue.

Musically, React is a powerful and imaginative record in its ability to blend the best aspects of punk and hardcore, speedy and heavy, into a cohesive LP. It’s about time a new generation of hardcore heads get to hear all that Ovethrow has to offer.
