Indianapolis death metal band Butchered came together through persistence rather than polish. Vocalist Mike Drury traces the band’s origins to an online connection. “The drummer and I met through a Facebook group,” he says. “It took a while to get things rolling with making time to practice and finding dedicated members.”
After working through lineup changes, including rotating bass players, the band eventually locked into a stable lineup. “We finally found a very talented, dedicated guitar player… and a permanent bass player.”
The band’s approach is direct and unapologetic. “‘Violent’ is the best way to describe Butchered,” Drury explains. “Heavy riffs and even heavier breakdowns. We write songs for the hard moshers and crowd killers.” Influences span the extremes of hardcore and death metal, drawing on bands such as Hatebreed, The Acacia Strain, Scattered Remnants, Final Resting Place, Pieced Up, and Sunami.
That mindset is captured on Butchered’s No. 1 Demo Worldwide, released last summer. “We released our EP in August, mixing all of our influences to make something we’d enjoy,” Drury says. “Just pure ignorance, with some personal additions.”
Looking ahead, the band plans to stay active. “We will be recording and releasing a new single and EP. We also will play more shows and just keep grinding.” Drury also points to No Means, Bite Back, Twice Mortal, Atavistic Decay, Ornament, and Pigtusk as other Indianapolis bands worth checking out.
