Band: Weight of Sin
From: Oahu, Hawaii
Their formation story:
(Drew Kramer, guitar): "So, it all started out with Sai Kawaiola our other guitarist and I sitting down writing riffs and talking music and how we envisioned our riff writing and sound to be. Nick Versola our drummer started jamming and all the pieces fit together perfectly instrumentally and talked to Jamie Boyle (formerly vocalist of Vicious Embrace, Flesh Tomb) and he was down to hop on vocals.
"David Evans is on bass and he was the last member to join but we were stoked to have another straight edge band member. WE ARE NOT A STRAIGHT EDGE BAND… we just have many members who are straight edge in the band."
Their sound in their own words:
(Jamie Boyle, vocals): "Our sound is an amalgamation of a bunch of different genres that all of us enjoy; we have metalcore, hardcore, and slam-inspired riffs in our songs but we just call ourselves a mosh metal band since that’s the best way to encapsulate what we sound like.
"Our sound is definitely influenced primarily by older hardcore/metalcore bands like Irate, and Six Ft Ditch. Additionally, we listen to a bunch of new bands that we draw inspiration from and it’d be hard to pin anything down specifically, although the newest Boundaries LP has pretty much unanimously gotten metalcore AOTY from us so that’s likely been a big influence as well."
Latest release info:
(Jamie): "Our newest release is a self-titled demo called that’s operating as a holdover while we finalize our current songs to record an EP. It’s definitely our fastest and bounciest song, and the lyrics are heavily inspired by both Warhammer 40K and Warhammer Fantasy as well; that said, a lot of our lyrics are very high-fantasy inspired."
Future plans:
(Jamie): "We’re getting around to start the recording process for our EP and are writing new songs as well. It’s pretty difficult to get off-island due to there being an extremely limited capability for exposure outside of the Internet and the same faces we see at shows.
"All that said, we’ve been trying to reach a broader audience by playing mixed-bill shows and reaching out to new venues so we’re going to continue trying to expose a wider audience to heavy music here in Hawai’i by having an open mind and have a willingness to play to different crowds. We’ll also obviously keep playing the heavy show bills we’re most appropriate on."
What other bands from their region should we check out?
(Drew): "There’s quite a few Hawai’i hardcore/metalcore adjacent bands such as ASWANG, Nesta, Third Degree, and Blood Money. These are bands you should definitely check out! The start of this whole renaissance wouldn’t have happened without bands like ASWANG, they really started the hardcore 'renaissance era' out here on Oahu.
"Third Degree really raised the bar and put pressure on a lot of people and you started seeing a lot of new bands and new projects emerge just after their release of their demo. Skylene is another band who you should checkout is more on the modern metalcore side of the genre Their vocalist lives on the mainland now but will occasionally play shows out here and we are stoked to be playing with them in the beginning of February before opening for Lorna Shore a few days after."
