New Hardcore Band Spotlight: Princess

Photo: Josh Brown

Band: Princess
From: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Their origin story:
(Melina Kennelly, vocalist): "The story is actually quite funny and simple! For a couple years, I always wanted to be in a band, and would practice vocals in my room on the days my roommates weren’t home. Jordan, Noah, and Zach were all in other bands and I would always go and support them, and after the shows, I would always rant to Jordan about how I wanted to do vocals and also write lyrics about topics that need to be talked about.

"So, basically all four of us were sitting at bar one night and Jordan started talking about how he wanted to start making more hardcore/punk music and we all had the same thought. And honestly from there, Noah sent us a demo that night that he had written, and I wrote some lyrics that I felt needed to be said, which became our song ‘Bad Luck.'

"As for our name, we were throwing around random names and I suggested 'rainbow princess unicorn,' which from there, the name Princess was born!"

Their sound in their own words:
"I would for sure say it is definitely a mix of hardcore and punk. Our influences for our sound were GEL, SPY, Scowl, and Primitive Blast."

Latest Release info:
"Our latest release just came out this past February and it was for sure an anticipated one. We actually recorded it in our own practice space over the course of a few days, which was probably one of my favorite parts of creating this EP.

"With our first release, lyrically, I wanted to really touch on points that especially today need to be talked about. All of our songs are about my personal experiences with racism, the manipulation of religion, and the corruption and destruction of the police."

Future Plans:
"I think I speak for all of us when I say we all are super excited for the future of this band. We just recently signed with Crimewave Records, which has been so sick. We for sure are hoping to tour this year, as well as release some new music!"

What other bands from their region should we check out?
"Eyewash, Tough Cuffs, Cutting Ties, Chump, Gator Shakes, Fortune Teller, Uzkost, Body Farm, Razorblade, and Constant Hell."
