New Hardcore Band Spotlight: No Skies

Band: No Skies
From: Edmonton, Canada

Their formation story:
"The four of us met through going to the same school and sharing an interest in playing music with like minded people. We didn’t intend to specifically play hardcore at first, which is why the demos we released in the last year or two sound quite different from the style we play now.

"Our music tastes when we first started out definitely leaned more towards classic punk and hardcore (Descendents, Bad Brains, Fugazi, etc.), but as we kept playing shows and our tastes continued to expand in more extreme directions, the songs we enjoyed writing and performing fell in line with the fast and angry metallic hardcore we play today."

Their sound in their own words:
"The most important thing to us when writing this EP was to stylistically pull from as many corners of hardcore as possible while keeping enough of a through line to have a consistent experience. Though the end product came out as dissonant and fast metallic hardcore, we drew inspiration from bands like Floorpunch and Foundation as well as more abrasive acts like Nails, Discordance Axis, and Converge."

Latest release info:
"We started working on it in August of last year, itching to get something new out as we felt that the more we played, the less the 2 demos we had previously released represented us as songwriters and musicians. In Absence of Virtue is definitely the most extreme set of songs we have up to date and the darker, metallic sound is the direction we will likely continue going forward."

Future plans:
"Our plans right now are writing new tracks and getting our licences to eventually tour western Canada."

What other bands from their region should we check out?
"Eyes Front, False Body, Contain, Hate Mission, Hydrate, Chaser, and Pre-Breaker."

In Absence of Virtue is available on CD and cassette via Herbicide Records.
