Band: MDOP
From: Grand Rapids, Michigan
Their formation story:
(Bo, guitar/vocals): "Anybody who writes graffiti knows what MDOP stands for. If you don’t, it means 'malicious destruction of property.' We named the project that because that was my introduction into how the American justice system works and what it means to live in a police state.
"As a minor I was incarcerated multiple times and it put a hinderance on my future and my family and started me personally on a path that lead to being where I am."
(Cig, drums): "MDOP was formed out of Bo and I previously being in a band together and it not quite going in the direction we wanted it to. We became really close through being in that band and developed a really good chemistry as far as making music together and being friends.
"When we started this band we just knew we wanted to do something heavy and make it sick, but we didn’t know what that looked like yet."
(Nik, bass): "I knew Bo and Cig because our bands played shows together when they were in their old band and I was playing with Gimmick. I hit up Cig because they’d been jamming together for a while and I was really excited about a post they made looking for a bassist."
Their sound in their own words:
(Bo, guitar/vocals): "When we started this band we had a way different outlook for what it would be, but over time we’ve kind of refined and discovered a little more of how we wanted to sound. We trust the listener to make their own interpretation."
Latest release info:
(Bo, guitar/vocals): "It took a while but we put out five intentional tracks that explore the many different styles that we enjoy and demonstrates how we have grown since our first online releases. Five-song cassette tape, self-released, shout out Cryptic Carousel, recorded/mixed/mastered by Don Carlisle at Golden Potato Studios, artwork and layout by our friend Squid."
Future plans:
(Bo, guitar/vocals): "Our immediate plans are a 10-day Midwest tour, July 6th through July 16th. The plan after that is to record another EP and we have plans for splits and weekend runs through the Fall. And we’re trying to play as many shows as we can."
What other bands from their region should we check out?
(Bo, guitar/vocals): "We have amazing friends in Gimmick, Felon Class, Split Up, Maze, Bitter Truth, Cemetery Girl, Sawchuk, Stunner, Mechanophile, Pink Pout, No Rails, Sissy Boys, and Free Space Shows in Grand Rapids. Special shout out to our friend Rosabelle who was briefly in MDOP and is now doing a project called Mileage.
"A final shoutout to the trans and queer community and all of the anarchists and communists in Grand Rapids, Michigan."
