Chattanooga straight edge outfit The Few technically began in 2019, but like many bands of that era, their momentum was cut short almost instantly. “We played one show in 2020 before the pandemic,” vocalist Philip Amos tells No Echo. “Once everything shut down, the project basically died.” It wasn’t until 2024—after Amos recorded what became their debut tape—that The Few resurfaced and hit the stage again.
The band’s lineup comes from years of crossing paths within Chattanooga’s tight-knit punk and hardcore community, as well as playing in various projects together. Amos and drummer Drew go even further back: two straight edge kids forming a punk band as teenagers after discovering Minor Threat on YouTube. “I claimed edge at 14,” Amos recalls.
“At first it was all about rebellion—declaring war on a culture hellbent on destruction.” What started as pushback against high school party culture eventually solidified into something deeper. “14 years later, it’s just who I am. And also because I hate drugs and alcohol and think they’re corny no matter what context they’re used in. Hang it up.”
Last month, The Few dropped II, a 4-song EP that includes a cover of Agnostic Front's "Last Warning" that fits perfectly into the festivities:
The Few’s adherence to a classic, uncompromising straight edge ethos made Armageddon Records a natural home for their first two EPs. Amos had long bonded with label head Josh Howell over straight edge hardcore, and the partnership clicked immediately. “Armageddon is a perfect hardcore label,” he says. “No-bullshit bands that serve the vision. When Josh said yes to the tapes, it meant a lot.”
Those cassettes—The Few and The Few II—function as bookended introductions to the band’s identity. “I wanted continuity,” Amos explains. “Four fast and brief hardcore songs that are unapologetically straight edge.” Whether a The Few III is on deck remains undecided, but the blueprint is firmly established.
For those unfamiliar with Chattanooga's scene, Amos is quick to point out the bands currently pushing things forward: Gumm, Switchblade, Downtown Dogs, No Score, Corrupted Influence, and Kick Out at Two. As for venues, the city’s history is volatile—DIY spaces open and disappear quickly—but shows today happen mainly at Yellow Racket Records, Redbud, and Boneyard. Though Amos no longer books shows regularly, he still puts on an annual December toy-drive gig.
Outside of The Few, Amos, Drew, and Trevor all play in the aforementioned Gumm, who released an excellent new LP this year on Convulse Records. But The Few remains its own focused statement—lean, raw, and rooted in the same sense of personal conviction that shaped Amos as a teenager.
