Helsinki-based hardcore band Primitive Future came together in 2025 in a way that feels fitting for a group built on immediacy and instinct. Drummer Valtteri was getting tattooed by vocalist Teppo when the idea first came up. “We talked about starting a new band,” he tells No Echo, “and he said he’d been having a similar conversation with Jaakko and Tuomo, but they were having trouble finding a drummer.”
At the time, Valtteri was already looking to get behind the kit for a hardcore band. The timing lined up, and just like that, Primitive Future was formed.
From the jump, the goal was clear: strip things down and keep it raw. The band set out to create something primitive but still memorable. “We wanted it to sound really raw and primitive but also catchy at the same time,” Valtteri says. That approach pulls from a mix of influences—’80s Boston hardcore, early UK punk, and a strong Scandinavian d-beat edge—all fused into something fast, direct, and no-frills.
That sound is fully realized on their debut release, The 1st Attack. Recorded in autumn 2025 by Ville Valavuo (Foreseen, Kohti Tuhoa, Modem), the cassette captures the band exactly as intended. “It sounds just like the way we like it,” Valtteri says. The release came together quickly, with Nakki of Mäntsälä Hardcore stepping in to handle the cassette version, which will be coming out later this year.
Lyrically, The 1st Attack draws from both the personal and the political. The band taps into the current state of the world, frustrations with the Finnish government, and the realities of blue-collar life. There’s also an unmistakable sense of atmosphere shaped by their environment. “Probably the Nordic darkness too,” Valtteri adds. “We spend half the year without light.”
Primitive Future is part of a Helsinki scene that remains active, even as Finland is more widely associated with heavier styles of hardcore. “The scene is good, and there are plenty of hardcore bands coming out of Helsinki,” he says, pointing to acts like Eyes Sewn Shut, Vengeful Blood, Blind Eye, and Kova Totuus, among others.
For now, the band is already looking ahead. New material is in the works, with more to come when the time is right. “We’re currently writing,” Valtteri says, “and it will hopefully see the daylight someday.”
