New Hardcore Band Spotlight: Hostility

Band: Hostility
From: Minneapolis, Minnesota

Their formation story:
(Agnes, vocals): "I had been trying to do vocals in a band for a while, and after a long spell of nothing working out, I tweeted, 'it would be very cool if you wanted to start a hardcore band with me + let me do vocals in it.' The drummer of our band, Dan, replied and said he'd be in.

"Our former bass player, Nicky, replied saying that he'd be down if Dan was drumming. Lastly, our guitar player, Marc, asked if he could play guitar. So a little Twitter thread of replies got us started, and we began jamming shortly after."

Their sound in their own words:
"Our sound is typical, capital 'H' hardcore, while also pulling a lot of sound from the punk side of hardcore. A lot of two-steps, stomping, and side-to-side parts. It's hardcore music that was made for the dancers.

"Our lyrics talk about being straight edge and queer. Some of the influences of Hostility are Turning Point, Floorpunch, and Inside Out. Also, Marc said he was listening to a lot of records from Youngblood and Revelation when writing the riffs for the demo."

Latest release info:
"We just put out a split, Chain of Hostility, with our friends in Chain of Hatred in mid-October. We each have 2 songs on it for 8 minutes of Twin Cities Straight Edge. Our first track, 'Hostility,' is a typical intro song with a little bit of power violence-inspired sound.

"The second track, 'Governed,' is a song based on lyrics from a poem that a homeless man I used to visit gave me years ago. His name is Michael, and he had given me a poem he wrote to turn into a scary or sad song, so I took his poem and set it to a song that the band had written, hoping that a hardcore song would fulfill Michael's dreams of his work being a scary, sad song.

"He told me the lyrics were about depression and feeling stuck, so the song truly emulates those feelings. You can listen to the split anywhere you listen to music."

Future plans:
"We have one last show to round out the year with our friends in Juicebox, Dose, Oath, and Position of Power! Then, to kick off the year, we're playing a classic basement show with some of our favorite local bands.

"Otherwise, we're in the middle of planning a little midwest run next spring. Until then, we're continuously writing new music in hopes of putting out our next release sometime next year and having a few new songs to bring on the road with us."

What other bands from their region should we check out?
"Identity Crisis, Bad Supremacy, Buio Omega, Lack, and ETO (Everybody Takes One)."
