New Hardcore Band Spotlight: Burning Kross

Photi: Shiny Dillen

Band: Burning Kross
From: Belgium

Their formation story:
(Kristof, bass): "Well, Tom (vocals), Jens (drummer) and I met at the last gig of me previous band. That was the last weekend of February 2020, two weeks later all hell broke loose. Anyway, both our previous bands had played together multiple times so we knew each other pretty good, and as the weeks passed we started talking more and more about doing this band together.

"The thing is, Tom and Jens their previous band, Permanent Debt, was calling it quits so they were looking for something new, and I always thought the both of them were at the top in their game so... We started talking about a band, thinking about a guitarist and hoping we could get a green light within the pandemic to start rehearsing.

"We found our guitarist in Pedro, I used to play with Pedro in Black Haven, he left the scene quite some time ago but was eager to come back so he didn't need time to think this over.

"The rehearsing only started late 2020, two times then lockdown again. It wasn't until spring of 2021 that we could really rehearse and write songs. But from there we took it as it came and here we are, our second mlp is about to drop!"

Their sound in their own words:
"We definitely started with Negative Approach and Jerry's Kids in mind. '80's US hardcore, of course flavored with the influence of some contemporaries. Today, I'd say we're a hardcore punk band that goes for the fast approach within hardcore range. We have a lot of D-beats, some crunchy riffing, a lot of drum rolls.

"Drums are actually very important in our song writing, and then there's the angry vocals. Up until now, lyrics were about two topics that were kept out of our history books, one being the Tulsa massacre and the other being the Paris massacre of 1961."

Latest release info:
"Well, everything is ready for the pressing plant. The cassette will probably be ready by April. The SEA/Indonesia version is already in pre-order. Next will be the US and UK/EU version. For the vinyl we'll work with Autoreverse again (That's Jos from Seein' Red his label), and we hope to have that ready by summer.

"Keith Caves did the artwork. It's his take on the Paris massacre of 1961. In a nutshell, this is about the struggle for independence of Algeria. During some peaceful protests the police got rough handed which led to people getting killed and being thrown off into the Seine. No jolly jolly lyrics here.

"Music was recorded at the legendary Studio 195, everything was mixed and mastered by Will at Dead Air Studios. Both delivered a top notch job, we couldn't be happier."

Future plans:
"We're looking forward to this new mlp to drop of course. And then play as much as possible. We're also looking if touring is an option, we got some great offers so far but it's a drag with work and stuff... Furthermore we're gonna do what we've been doing for some time now, rage on stage and write new (hopefully) bangers."

What other bands from their region should we check out?
"Well, Belgium actually has a very thriving scene. There definitely are a lot of cool bands like Haemers, Raw Peace, Hetze, Colère, Terre Neuve, Vaag, Instructor... Great stuff to be found here."
