New Hardcore Band Spotlight: Before Your Eyes

Band: Before Your Eyes
From: Boston, Massachusetts

Their formation story:
(Brian Hull, drums): “Before Your Eyes came together because a bunch of us old hardcore dudes realized we weren't quite done making music yet. We've all been involved in the hardcore scene for decades, whether playing in bands, going to shows, writing a zine, or generally supporting the local scene.

"Our guitarist Brian and bassist Sean were really the catalyst. They played in several bands together in the ’90s and 2000s, and after Brian’s son’s band, Far Too Late, started practicing and playing shows, they looked at each other and basically said, ‘Why the fuck aren't we doing this anymore?’

"They started Before Your Eyes in early 2025 with another drummer. I originally came in to try out as the singer, but when the drummer decided he didn't want to be in another band, I switched over to drums.

"After trying out a couple of singers, Evan joined in early 2026, and things really started coming together. Not long afterward, Russ joined as our second guitarist. He had played in bands with Evan’s dad, so it was another natural connection that rounded out the lineup.

"The band name is a tribute to our old friend Jason Linsky, who was murdered. He would throw up the B.Y.E. tag everywhere, and the artwork for our new EP is one of his late-’90s pieces.

"At the end of the day, Before Your Eyes is five friends who have been part of hardcore for most of their lives, making the kind of music we've always loved. We're all older guys, with the exception of Evan, but the passion, energy, and attitude haven't changed.”

Their sound in their own words:
“We describe our sound as old-school, ’90s-influenced hardcore with a modern edge. Our running joke is that we're an ‘old man hardcore’ band. Our music has a strong New York hardcore influence, with the distinct Boston Hardcore sound running through most of what we write.

"The foundation is that classic late-’80s and ’90s East Coast hardcore sound. We're playing the kind of music that made us fall in love with hardcore in the first place while putting our own spin on it.”

Latest release info:
“We recently released a single from our upcoming three-song EP. We recorded everything in my basement studio, and I mixed and mastered it for self-release. Now that we're a full five-piece band, we wanted to release our second EP with both guitarists and capture what we're all about musically: aggressive, straightforward, old-school hardcore with lyrics that reflect personal struggles, frustrations, and the realities of everyday life.

"'Bootstrap’ deals with depression, self-perception, and finding the motivation to improve your life. ‘In Fight’ explores self-awareness and the battle against the intrusive negative thoughts and impulses we all face.

"‘Brainrot’ rejects the modern attention economy and the real-world conveniences meant to keep you tied to the rat race. Get off your phone, go to a show, support your local community, experience new things, and form your own opinions instead of letting algorithms and influencers shape how you see the world. Don't trade community for an online presence.”

Future plans:
“We've been having a great time playing shows all over New England, and we definitely want to keep that momentum going. We're playing several shows in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island in November and December.

"Over the winter, we'll finish writing a few more songs and go back into my studio to record a full-length LP, out in early 2027.

"Brian and I also book shows in Rhode Island and Massachusetts through Consider It Done Productions, so we'll keep supporting other bands that way while planning a longer tour for sometime in the spring after the full-length comes out.”

What other bands from your region should we check out?
“The Northeast has always been an epicenter of amazing hardcore bands, and there is so much great music coming out of New England right now.

"A few newer bands we'd encourage people to check out are Outnumbered, Fifth World, and Blossom from Vermont; Stab from Maine; Vice Grip, Quick to Judge, Can’t Lose, The Promised End, Burning Lord, Low Tide, Breakout From Oppression, and Search Warrant from Massachusetts; and Neolithic, If It Rains, Jugg, Providence but on Fire, and Edict from Rhode Island.

"We also want to give a special shoutout to Step First and Far Too Late, two amazing younger bands that are bringing a new generation of kids into the hardcore scene to keep it moving forward.

"No matter where you are, get out to shows, support local bands, go early and check out the opening bands, and buy some merch. Support the people keeping hardcore alive.”
