Band: Attrition
From: West Flanders, Belgium
Their formation story:
(Thomas Lambert, vocals): "Basically, we've all been friends and friends of friends for years and some of us have already shared the stage in other bands. Frederic, our guitar player, and Gillian, our drummer, had been talking about starting something new for a while, but it never actually got to the point of actual live music. Around the same time i also came with the idea to do a take on the new wave of death metal, reached out to them and so we joined forced to actually give it a go.
"We've all been part of our local scene here (better known as H8000) in Belgium for many years. Frederic and I play in a death-infused hardcore band called Deconsecrate and Gillian was part of the metalcore unit, Mark My Way. We recruited Thibault (ex-Corpse Mutilation) on second guitar and Sybren on bass, two mutual friends and experienced musicians we knew where up to the task of bringing the groove and filth we where looking for. And so Attrition got formed."
Their sound in their own words:
"As for the sound, it was always the intention to try and take on the old-school death metal sound, tho there was always going to be hardcore infused in the sound, as all of us have roots in the genre and it just comes naturally. That actually leads to what we got now. The rise of modern DM bands like Gatecreeper, Frozen Soul, and Fuming Mouth also sort of helped to give us direction.
"We also went with the classic Swedish death metal guitar tone with the boss HM-2 distortion pedal. I had previously played in a grind/hardcore band called Seventh Circle that also used this pedal to filthen up our sound and got hooked on the tone, and to be honest, there is nothing that makes a guitar sound more filthy and aggressive then the good ol swedish approach. And for what we're aiming for, it was a perfect match.
"As for actual influences, I think the ones mentioned above are pretty sufficient, although we've also noticed some hints of Bolt Thrower in there somewhere."
Latest release info:
"The two songs we've released so far are part of a 4-song self-titled release. They're actually also the very first tracks we've written as a band so these songs are our first steps in exploring a genre that we all love, but as musicians, are still a little unfamiliar with. To be fair, every one of us is extremely proud of the tracks we've written and recorded and are stoked on the future of this band and how the sound might evolve during the next couple years.
"As for now, the release is limited to digital platforms, but we just signed on with Belgium's Deathfarm Records who will be releasing the material on cassette and digipack CD in early 2024. More info on that will soon follow.
"We recorded all these tracks in our guitar players attic where he started his own cozy recording studio called Hardwired Audio. We couldn't be more happy with the way they turned out."
Future plans:
"We played our first show yesterday (as i'm writing this) and had a blast. We still have some shows planned for this and next year and in the meantime we'll gradually start working on some new music. Also, we'll hopefully get the physical copies for this release early next year. Right now we'll focus on playing as many shows as we can and write the filthiest / grooviest tunes possible and have as much fun as we can while doing so. Bring it."
What other bands from the region should we check out?
"Right now, we got some pretty amazing bands that bring a breath of fresh air to the scene, definitely check out Primal Truth, filthy heavy hardcore with a hint of death, Game Changer, Eurocore at its very best, bringing an old-school Kickback vibe. Belgian hardcore kings Mindwar, no need for introduction really, you've heard of them.
"Feverchild, emo at its finest, ready to conquer the world. Weak Link, new kids playing a violent mix of H8000 metalcore and modern hardcore. Also check out Minded Fury, Deconsecrate, LowLife, Crucified, Retaliation. Not a band, but Return Bookings are a local booker who right now are having a massive impact on the scene, doing tons of shows with local and international bands. definitely worth a mention."
