Bryle Tomilap, known for fronting the metallic hardcore band Turnpike, returns with a new project called Occupational Hazards. This time, he strips away the metallic edge in favor of something more primitive.
Out now on Frontal Assault Records, EP1: Reality is a Stranger... trades metallic flourishes for raw, '80s-flavored hardcore punk rooted in d-beat and crust. For Tomilap, Occupational Hazards is both a creative reset and a nod to the music that shaped his early years.
Tomilap tells No Echo that Occupational Hazards draws influence from bands like The Stains, Angry Samoans, and Antidote, as well as the abrasive energy of early '90s crust acts like Disrupt, Siege, and Nausea.
Tomilap describes the band as an antithesis to his songwriting in Turnpike, explaining that he wanted to return to the fundamentals of hardcore punk while stepping away from what he sees as an increasingly crowded landscape of Y2K metallic hardcore revival bands.
This is the second EP from Frontal Assault Records, a label owned and operated by Tomilap based in Butuan City, Philippines. Releases like Occupational Hazards aim to spotlight the local scene and bring more attention to the city's growing underground community.
