Band: Headspin
From: Los Angeles, California
Their formation story:
(Connor McKenna, vocals): "After years of making dance and experimental music, I found myself drawn back to hardcore and picked up a guitar again. Over the course of five years, I wrote what became our self-titled EP, not really planning to share it with anyone. But in Spring 2024, Neil, our drummer, reached out to me on Instagram wanting to jam.
"I played him the tracks, and he was instantly hooked. We jammed for a few months, and he eventually convinced me to take it to the studio. I met Quinn at school, and we instantly connected over hardcore. When he showed me what he was working on with '92, I knew he had to be part of this project.
"David joined after responding to a demo I posted on Reddit, and Kevin, who I used to live with, jumped in because we always jammed but never actually played in a band together."
Their sound in their own words:
"We’re slaves to rhythm and exploration. We’re excited to develop our style and let it grow into something that fits each of our unique qualities. Our first EP is heavily influenced by Rage Against the Machine, Leeway, Both Worlds, Biohazard, footwork music and in general, late '90s/early '00s rock and nu metal."
Latest release info:
"For this first release, I aimed to create songs that are not only aggressive but also rhythmic. I'm heavily inspired by the precision and energy of footwork, which I see as having a lot in common with hardcore music.
"Both genres are high-energy and have their own distinct dance styles. I brought in drum rhythms and lyrical nods that are fundamental to the style of footwork, but kept the songs hardcore in nature."
Future plans:
"Right now, we're focused on writing new music for our next release. The positive feedback from our peers and fans has been really motivating. We're planning to play more shows and, if all goes well, hopefully hit the road again for a tour in Spring and Summer 2025.
What other bands from their region should we check out?
"‘92, Monk, Jack-Knife, Cure For Youth, More to Pride, Hatespeech, DevonWho, Cakedog."
