After 8 years and several releases on Relapse Records, Gatecreeper are embarking on a new chapter in their career.
The Arizona death metal outfit just announced that they've signed with Nuclear Blast Records, arguably the biggest label in the metal realm. Formed in 2013, Gatecreeper has released two studio albums, Sonoran Depravation (2016) and Deserted (2019), and toured throughout the world with such bands as Cannibal Corpse, Power Trip, and Municipal Waste.
For their Nuclear Blast debut offering, Gatecreeper will be releasing their third album, Dark Superstition, this May. “Many of the songs incorporate supernatural ideas with my own experiences,” says frontman Mason. “But the title itself is a reference to the Superstition Mountains in our home state of Arizona. It’s a beautiful mountain range surrounded by tragedy and legends of hidden fortune.”
Recorded at God City Studios in Salem, Massachusetts with Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou, the album's first single is a track called "The Black Curtain" and Gatecreeper have teamed up with Max Moore who has directed a tripped-out music video for the track:
“It’s about being trapped between living and dying,” Mason says about the song's lyrics. “A soul trapped in purgatory begging to be brought back by a supernatural force.”
For the Dark Superstition sessions, Gatecreeper hooked up with drummer and songwriter Fred Estby of the legendary Swedish death metallers, Dismember. His fingerprints can apparently be heard throughout the album.
In addition to the album release, Gatecreeper will set out on a Southeast Asian tour covering Japan, Thailand, Vietnam , Australia, New Zealand, and more. They have also confirmed a North American support run with In Flames which covers East Coast, the Midwest and Texas. See below for a full list of dates. Tickets are on sale now.
Dark Superstition will be on May 17th via Nuclear Blast Records (pre-order).
