Band: The Shotgun Prodigy
From: Tampa, Florida

Their formation story:
(Dominic, lead guitar): “While Austin was still in high school, he wanted to start a band called Modern Dialogue, so he started searching for members. He asked a friend to join the band. At the time, I was willing to be in any band because I just wanted to play music and perform live.

“Eventually, we practiced at Austin’s place, but it didn’t go so well. After that failed attempt at rehearsal, we didn’t meet up again for months. Austin eventually hit me up again about starting a band called The Shotgun Prodigy. He already had members lined up, so we got to rehearsing. It was rough for the first couple of months, but ever since then, we’ve been playing music.”

Their sound in their own words:
(Decker, drums): “Our goal originally was to have more of a mathcore influence, covering songs like ‘43% Burnt’ by The Dillinger Escape Plan while also bringing in some of the fundamentals of Norma Jean. After some lineup changes, we developed a wider variety of influences, like On Broken Wings, still Norma Jean, and a bit more Converge.

“Other members of the band love Vein.fm and riffs inspired by withpaperwings, but we still stay true to that older metalcore/mathcore sound with a bit of screamo sprinkled in here and there.”

Latest release info:
(Austin, vocals): “For this release, we wanted it to feel like a showcase of all of our skills and make something unique. Some big influences on the EP were Concealer, Contention, and Withpaperwings, so we talked to our label about working with John Howard, who produced all of those records.

“He was honestly the last piece of the puzzle for the EP. We definitely want to work with him again for our next release.”

Future plans:
(Ethan, guitar): “We have a lot of shows that we’re really excited to announce. We’re supporting touring acts from around the country that we listen to all the time, as well as playing with good friends from all around the world.”

What other bands from their region should we check out?
(Ben, bass): “Shinra’s Falling, Polabyla, Repeater, and Cyanide Christ.”

The EP is available on CD and cassette via Armageddon Records.
