Candy Apple: Denver Hardcore Punks Announce Comatose LP, Release Short Film

Candy Apple first appeared on No Echo via Adam Yoe's review of the band's 2021 debut album, Sweet Dreams of Violence.

At the time, he wrote: "Straddling the line between the furious blitz of straightforward hardcore and the scornful scuzz of punk, this should appeal to fans of everyone from GEL and BIB to the weaponized attack of their stunning stablemates Drill Sergeant, Cell Rot, and Punitive Damage." That's a perfect way to describe the Denver band's sound, so I won't muck it up here.

I'm writing about Candy Apple today to let our readers know that they're coming out with a new album in May called Comatose. The 9-song collection is the follow-up to their World for Sale EP, which dropped in 2022.

Convulse Records just released three new tracks from the album to get us excited: "Paralyzed," "Pull the Plug," and "Heavens Gate":

In addition to Comatose, Candy Apple have teamed up with director Cain Cox for Total Control, a 25-minute short film featuring the songs above. Here's what Candy Apple shared about the film:

"We are all film lovers. After completing our last music video, 'I Don't Wanna Talk About It,' which was directed by Cain Cox, we wanted to go all in on creating a longer-form narrative film that still emphasized the band's music and vision. The result is Total Control, a short film also directed by Cain Cox, that expands upon the themes and narrative we were only able to scratch the surface of in our first video.

"This film, which concludes at just under 30 minutes, explores themes of choice, consequence, and self-control. Inspired by grindhouse, horror, and slasher movies of the 1970s and 1980s, the film strikes a balance between disgusting, gross-out horror and slapstick humor with an array of set design and special effects that were all created in-house by the band and director Cain Cox."

While I can't post the full video below because of the age restriction the record label put on it, I'll embed the film's trailer below, and you can watch the entire thing at this link:

Comatose will be on out May 17th via Convulse Records.
